Round Table Confab
Through feedback found in the mid-year reports and conversations with many grantees, I want to create a collaborative forum for programs to come together to talk about needs and areas of opportunity. The four main topics of discussion will be student recruitment, parent engagement, staff retention, and behavior management. Each table will have a list of questions to pursue in a 45 minute discussion, and then there will be a 15 minute share out of all ideas. All topics will be recorded in a google document that a scribe at each table will be responsible for adding into. In the end, all ideas will be shared with all attendees via the google document.

Check Your Gut
A growing number of studies show a link between hidden biases and actual behavior. In other words, hidden biases can reveal themselves in action, especially when a person's efforts to control behavior consciously flags under stress, distraction, relaxation, or competition. If people are aware of their hidden biases, they can monitor and attempt to ameliorate hidden attitudes before they are expressed through behavior. Such efforts may, over time, reduce the strength of unconscious biases.

Learning to Breathe: Mindfulness for Youth
Social and emotional skills play a fundamental role in the attainment of academic goals. These skills help to channel attention to productive tasks, sustain motivation when work becomes demanding, and handle the frustrations of sharing and learning within a peer group. All of these skills depend upon the ability to understand and manage emotions. This is where mindfulness can be beneficial! Learning to Breathe is a mindfulness-based curriculum for youth. Mindfulness offers the opportunity to develop resilience in the face of uncomfortable feelings that otherwise might provoke a response that could be harmful.

Incentives That Matter
How and why are youth rewarded in your program? Does every staff member give out incentives consistently between youth and behaviors? Has your incentive system actually created any form of long term change in program attendees? If you lack clear answers for any of these questions this session is intended to help you answer them for your program. Using a tried and true method we will review the values your program has and how to use those values to create an incentive system that doesn't reward behavior, but instead rewards meaningful conversations that assists youth in connecting their behavior to abstract concepts like "Compassion" and "Resilience."
